How Many Chiropractors Does It Take To Change A Lightbulb?
I heard the latest one the other day.
Here is one for you – how many chiropractors does is take to change a light globe? 1 but they need to come back 100 times.
I get the humour – very funny.
But it got me thinking – the joke DOES highlight a common complaint -: if you see a chiropractor you need to go forever.:
My opinion – everyone, should see a chiropractor for their entire life. Too bad my opinion only matters to me…
What really matters is your opinion and what’s most important to you.
Let me explain…
I went to the dentist the other day for a routine clean and checkup. There are a lot of similarities between chiropractic and dentistry you know.
I have always had my teeth checked and cleaned around once a year. It’s what my dentist recommends since I have never had fillings or decay. She said it’s because I have a good diet and drink a lot of water. She said if she was concerned she would see me 2x a year.
She called it dental hygiene.
And then there was a time when I lost one of my front teeth in a head clash. That required root canal, followed by a crown. I was at the dentist something like 2x a week for several weeks getting extensive work done.
This was called corrective care.
In my chiropractic practice, I have 2 broad types of patients – corrective care patients and wellness patients.
More often than not, the first time someone comes to see me they are in pain. Normally, the underlying problem has been developing over years leading to spinal degeneration (like tooth decay), and changes in posture.
To fully correct the problem, corrective care is usually required. Whilst we can’t put braces on your spine, we can use spinal orthotics and adjustments and exercises to correct the position of your spine. But just like braces, this process can take months and years depending on how bad the problem got.
Once the problem is corrected, I always recommend we maintain the spine with home-based exercise (like brushing your teeth daily), and routine spinal checks to keep your spine in tip top condition. To maintain the health of your spine.
But this is where it’s your decision – I will always make perfect world recommendations for you and do my best to explain my reasoning.
How long you choose to benefit from chiropractic care is always your decision.
When you do choose to maintain your spine, it will last you your lifetime and enhance the quality of your life.
Unfortunately, the biggest difference between dentistry and chiropractic is that you can replace your teeth with dentures and crowns – but we cannot replace your spine.
